10 Tips to Keep Your Pigs Happy & Healthy!

Pigs are intelligent, social, and remarkably resilient animals. Whether you're a small-scale farmer, a hobbyist, or just someone with a soft spot for these adorable creatures, ensuring the well-being of your pigs is crucial. Happy and healthy pigs not only lead to a more fulfilling life for the animals themselves but also contribute to a more successful and productive farming experience. Here are 10 essential tips to help you keep your pigs happy and healthy:

  1. Provide Adequate Housing: Creating a suitable living environment is the foundation of your pigs' happiness and health. Pigs should have access to shelter that protects them from harsh weather conditions, direct sunlight, and extreme temperatures. The housing should be well-ventilated, clean, and spacious enough to allow them to move around comfortably. Bedding made from straw, hay, or wood shavings can provide a soft and comfortable surface for them to rest on.

  2. Shade: Keep your pigs cool. Heat stress can occur when the temps are over 80 degrees & your beloved pig is over 100 lbs. This can be a life threatening situation. If your pig does overheat, keep applying cold water over them until their temperature comes down. Better to avoid this situation by choosing an area that has trees to house your pigs. This gives them the option to escape from the heat of the day. If trees aren’t an option for their area, construct a simple hog hut or lean-to shelter. You’re pigs will love you for it!

  3. Create Wallows: Pigs don’t have sweat glands! So how do they stay cool? They dig a wallow! A wallow is a shallow depression containing muddy water in which a pig will often dig and root before entering to cover themselves in mud. Make sure wallows are full so your pigs can get maximum cool down. Ensuring there’s plenty of water for lots of mud is a good thing! The dried mud will protect them from sunburn on their sensitive skin.

  4. Offer a Balanced Diet: Pigs are omnivores and have specific dietary needs. Their diet should consist of a balanced mix of grains, protein sources, vegetables, and fruits. Consult with a veterinarian or a livestock nutritionist to determine the appropriate feed and supplements for your pigs based on their age, size, and purpose (meat production or breeding). Providing fresh and clean water at all times is also essential to their well-being. Did you know there are things a pig can’t eat? Some of these no-no’s include: raw eggs, milkweed, onions, avocados & sugar. Be sure to do your research & have a list on hand of all the items that shouldn’t head out to the pigs.

  5. Encourage Social Interaction: Pigs are highly social animals that thrive on interaction with their fellow pen-mates and with humans. If possible, keep pigs in groups rather than isolating them, as this mimics their natural social behavior. Spending time with your pigs, talking to them, and providing gentle scratches or belly rubs can help build a positive bond. Social stimulation prevents boredom and reduces stress.

  6. Practice Good Hygiene: Maintaining cleanliness in the pig's living space is crucial to prevent diseases and infections. Regularly clean and disinfect their pens, water troughs, and feeders. Removing waste promptly and providing proper drainage will contribute to a healthier environment. Good hygiene practices also extend to the handling of the pigs, requiring you to wash your hands and change your clothes after interacting with them to avoid potential cross-contamination.

  7. Health Monitoring: Regular health check-ups are essential to catch any potential health issues early. Establish a relationship with a veterinarian experienced in pig care who can perform routine check-ups and vaccinations. Watch for signs of illness such as lethargy, loss of appetite, coughing, or changes in behavior. Prompt action can make a significant difference in preventing the spread of disease and ensuring a quick recovery.

  8. Enrichment Activities: Just like any intelligent animal, pigs need mental stimulation. Engage them with various enrichment activities to keep them mentally active and prevent boredom. Scatter food around their enclosure to encourage foraging behavior, provide toys or objects they can manipulate, and create spaces for them to root and explore. These activities help alleviate stress and improve their overall well-being.

  9. Exercise and Outdoor Access: Allowing pigs access to outdoor areas where they can root and graze provides them with valuable exercise and mental stimulation. If your pigs are kept indoors, consider setting up a secure outdoor space where they can enjoy the sun and fresh air. However, make sure the area is adequately fenced and protected from predators.

  10. Trust & Bonding: Socialization is key. Spend time with your pigs. Walk their pasture with them or grab a chair, sit & observe them! They will get used to you in a very calm way. Pigs are curious creatures, let them come to you! You’re forming a forever bond. And love on those bellies! Pigs love a good belly rub. Pigs can also be trained to walk on a leash & take commands further building a bond with you.
